2011 UNY Cosplay Picnic

August 2nd, 2011 Alysson Edit

On August 6, 2011, UNYCosplay (the Upstate New York Cosplay Society) will host its annual Cosplay Picnic at Saratoga Spa State Park. Last year, Jen, Rayna, and myself went for the first time and had an absolute blast, and this year promises to be just as fun.

Set in a cozy pavilion in the picturesque park, the Picnic is a great way for cosplayers to meet new people in a casual social situation. It’s very different from the hustle and bustle of a convention, which is what makes it more relaxed. The park offers a beautiful natural backdrop for playing games, enjoying barbeque, or taking pictures… all while being dressed up in your favorite cosplay (though it is recommended that you consider the practicality of your costume in the “natural world”)

This year’s theme for the Picnic is Matsuri (which I personally interpret as cherry blossom festival, though I’m sure it could apply to any Japanese festival). Activities of the day will include:

* Cosplay Contest
* Iron Cosplay
* Food — Barbeque and Potluck: Bring a snack or drink!
* Karaoke
* Swap Meet
* Costume Contest
* Coloring Contest
* Photo Scavenger Hunt (you will need a digital camera for this)
* Sports, games, and activities

You can pre-register for this event by visiting their forum and following the instructions there, or if you are already a follower of UNYCosplay on Facebook, you can choose to attend the Picnic right on their event page. Admission to the event is $7 if you pre-register and $10 if you just show up. While the club will provide the “barbeque basics”, they do ask if people could please contribute some food dish for the potluck as well. Also, parking at the Park will cost $8 per car load, so car-pooling is encouraged.

This year, Dave, Mike, and myself will be attending. We look forward to seeing people we’ve met over the past year at various UNYCosplay-hosted and attended events. Come out and join us for a day of fun!
