Recently, Denya, Rayna, and myself got into a slight debate over elves and how long their pregnancies last. And in looking for an answer (and in Googling, “elf pregnancy”) I came across this very interesting article which has its basis in JRR Tolkien’s “Laws and Customs of the Eldar” essay, which focuses on elf marriage customs, intimacy, and birth.
Entitled What Tolkien Officially Said About Elf Sex, the article takes a scholarly–if not positively humorous–look at Tolkien’s own writings on the subject. Pulling not only from the “Laws” (acronym, “LACE”) essay, as well as from various passages from Tolkien’s numerous books, the article basically offers up an abridged version of the answers to numerous questions, such as “do elves enjoy sex?”, “what are elven marriage customs?”, “are elves capable of adultery?”, and, of course, “how long do elves stay pregnant for?”
It’s definitely a worthwhile and witty read to check out, but I might as well at least give you the answer to the question that started it all. I don’t know, it seems a bit short:
